The Ancient Root of Frequency Healing: An Introduction to Sound Therapy
By Kristi L., Reiki Master & Guest Writer

In this 2-part series we’ll touch on the many types of sound therapy frequency healing, vibrational healing, and energy healing. You’ll see that oftentimes, the most modern problems need a simple solution by returning to the basics.
Sound Healing
Healing through sound is a method that has been used for centuries. In ancient Egypt, people used chanting and sound vibrations within stone chambers for meditation and healing. In ancient India, mantras and chanting were used to balance the chakras. Similarly, ancient Greeks used flutes and lyres to aid physical issues and calm the mind. Tibetan and Asian cultures used bowls and bells created to produce healing tones for meditation and to move stagnant energy. And indigenous cultures used drumming, rattles, and chanting for healing individuals as well as the community. Our ancestors knew that sound healing was an invaluable way to help the human body return to homeostasis through deep relaxation, lowering stress hormone levels, and shifting brainwave patterns.
Rest and Digest vs Fight or Flight
Today, science teaches us that sound healing actually activates the nervous system, cellular vibration, and heart rate regulation. It works via sound inputs from instruments (like singing bowls or tuning forks); these stimulate the vagus nerve, helping the body go into a parasympathetic state also called "rest-and-digest" state, which is the opposite of “fight-or-flight.”
The “rest-and-digest” state controls internal organs and helps the body slow down, relax, and conserve energy. The steady tones help slow active brainwaves (beta waves) down into relaxed alpha and theta states, echoing deep meditation. Cortisol (the stress hormone) and adrenaline levels drop, while feel-good neurotransmitters (the body’s chemical messengers like endorphins) increase. Heart rate and blood pressure decrease as physical tension leaves the muscles. Because the human body is mostly water, low-frequency sound waves travel through tissue, which early studies suggest may ease joint or muscle pain and improve local circulation. As the sound healing relaxes the entire body, this allows the body to heal as it was designed to do.
Frequency / Vibrational Healing
Frequency and/or vibrational healing uses specific sound wave pitches to promote wellness, relaxation, and healing. Tools such as Tibetan or crystal singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks or a person’s own voice humming, chanting, or singing are used to feel the physical vibrations. More modern tools include soundtracks and apps of specifically-tuned frequencies, binaural beats, and sound generators. Recently, solfeggio frequencies have seen a rise in popularity; however, they’re about 50 years old and are actually based on medieval chants. There are nine solfeggio frequencies and you can match the sound to your particular concern such as pain or sleep issues.
Energy Healing
Energy healing is truly a vast modality and can include methods like acupuncture, qigong, EFT (tapping/Emotional Freedom Technique), and Reiki. It’s helpful to remember that everything that surrounds us has its own energetic frequency, including our food, the products we use, the fabrics we wear, our thoughts, emotions and even nature.
According to inventor and author Dr. Royal R. Rife, “A healthy human body resonates at a frequency of 62-78 MHz and the disease starts when the frequency drops to 58 MHz.” Knowing all that we know about frequencies and energy healing, we can maintain the optimum frequency or even improve it based on the food we eat, the thoughts we allow ourselves to focus on, and the environment we surround ourselves in. We can maximize the high frequency by surrounding ourselves with multiple high frequency inputs. For example, the Schumann Resonance is the Earth’s frequency and it's believed that listening to this frequency can reduce the impact of artificial EMFs. Nikola Tesla studied frequencies using 3-6-9 combinations for balance and promoting well-being. He included the two solfeggio frequencies 396Hz and 639 Hz as he believed they connected us with natural laws and energies.
There are so many options based on your needs and lifestyle. I have personally experienced relaxation, improved sleep, and healing with all these methods. I feel each one has great benefits and it depends on your individual needs and preferences as to what will work best. I have not experienced anything negative with any of these options. I have also had great fun trying all the different styles and have met fantastic people while doing so. Explore all the options available and feel into which one resonates with you (pun intended)!
